The Mike Herrera Podcast (philosophy)

Mike takes Skype calls from friends and fans and talks to Jason Call from Daphne Loves Derby about how they got 5 million downloads.

MHH 150

How an unsigned band got 5 Million downloads while the music business was breaking and more stories from you, my friends and listeners. My main guest is Jason Call of the band Daphne Loves Derby and now Mariner. We talk about his band's space rocket to success by gaining more than 5 million downloads for just 1 song through sites like PureVolume and MySpace and how that led to a record deal, world tours. How did it happen? How did they do it? Did they hack the system or were they just the first to do it?

Special Note: This episode I'm taking your calls on skype. It was a very last minute decision to do a podcast solely based on who I could talk to via skype at that very second. Thanks to Louis DeFabrizio, Nate Allen, Thiago Messias for the chat and everyone else that I didn't get to actually talk to on the podcast. I'll do this again and it will continue to improve.

I also announce the winners of the something free from the Merch Arsenal drawing. Yes.. I do that.

Social Media Conference, Public Speaking, Marketing, Networking, DIY Entrepreneurship, and more with Wesley Hoffman and Corey Smale. Find them on Twitter: The Strangehouse, @thestrangehouse, Wesley Hoffman, @wesleyhoffman, Corey Smale, @coreysmale.

MHH147 -  Wesley Hoffman. Corey Smale. Today’s show is brought to you by Casper.

Meet the guys behind #STRANGEHOUSEWORKSHOP and @thestrangehouse Podcast. A new kind of marketing conference. Food and brew included. They hired me to speak about my longevity and how I learned to connect with my audience above all else. And that led me down the social media path pretty early on. We started our website on March 19, 1996.

In this episode we talk mainly about the event and the business atmosphere in St. Louis. March 11. We also cover the actual planning and workflow that was done to prepare for the event. We get a little granular at times but ultimately we bare out some gems. I'm hoping you agree. We get inside a few deep layers here. I really hope you can get something good out of this talk. I did. I'm always learning new ways to live and think. As I travel I'm always meeting new and interesting people. St. Louis was no exception. Listen and enjoy a look inside the stories that make up our lives. And please send in your comments in the section below or wherever you see me on social media.

TOPICS- Delayed flight. City Museum. Food. Drinks. Social media. Songs. I always change my set. So I do things I don't plan. And don't do things I do plan. It's like joy/pain. Bitter/sweet.

MORE TOPICS- Morning routines. weekly habits. Mentioned docs & TV- Viceland- Fuck that's Delicious, Bompton with Kendrick Lemar. Recent Books.

Are you an entrepreneur or Freelancer?  I'm a dichotomy. I'm both. But something like a business type can't really define you. We are always making micro adjustments in our lives and in our world view. Business is the perfect example because it never stops changing and common sense is common of reason.

A big turning point and catalyst for change in my life was inevitable. But specifically for me it was continued self-learning. Books. Then The Internet. Podcasts. YouTube. Documentaries. Live Performance. I study humans. And writing.

Questions. Is exercise important to being happy? What does it do for you? If not, why don't you need it?

2 Pac. Hit me up. Bad boy killas. I work out to shit like that. I get serious about it. But I also think a lot. Solve problems. Ideas just hit me. Hit me up. I'm always writing down lines and ideas between sets. On my phone usually. I look like a teenager glued to my phone. But I'm writing it down cause every time I don't, I forget.  I also work out to songs like, Fat Bottom Girls by Queen. Try not getting a burst of energy with that kick drum pumping and Freddy giving so much of himself. SO music can definitely move you. However, we don't talk about Queen in this episode. Get after it!

FREE MUSIC CONTEST- After the weekend I will pick 1 lucky winner from my email list. PRIZE-That person will get to choose 1 of any piece of music off of the MXPX Merch Arsenal.

Jesse Lawson, Ryan McKinnon and Brad Miranda are on the podcast this week! @theJesseLawson @RjMckinnon @BradlygMiranda.

That something new for me really worked out well! I'm in St. Louis, sitting in my hotel room after a big day at the #STRANGEHOUSEWORKSHOP event that I spoke at. I had expressed some self doubt and nervousness on the podcast about the (at the time) impending doom aka "the TALK".

In this episode I had a great talk with Musician/ Songwriter, Jesse Lawson, Photographer, Ryan McKinnon, and Engineer/MTS Producer, Bradly G Miranda aka Huggies. We talk about chicago, beer, songs, music, punk, rock, business, photography, movies, podcasts.

For anyone with hustle and big ideas. This episode is for you.

I talk about my trip to Chicago and the new MXPX Pokinatcha Left Coast Style IPA craft beer that we collabed with 350 Brewing in Tinley Park. Chicago is a respectable city. We'll be back for 350 Fest- August 27th, 2016. Tickets on-sale right here:

Meditation when he wakes up.

MHH145 with James Hunnicutt - A singer/songwriter/musician from Washington State, USA...

"I believe that the most powerful & universal languages in humanity are love & music...
I do what I do because I love it. My love for life & music empowers me & I have learned that what I do empowers others from time to time as well & this realization is invaluable in my opinion... It brings an inner wealth along with it that $ & material possessions can't even come close to comparing with... " -James Hunnicutt

Find out what it was like to watch Stanly Kubrick's A clockwork orange for the first time  while also taking shrooms for the first time. Friday night at the powerlines!

We both grew up in the same areas and our paths have criss-crossed now and again. James in an amazing performer and songwriter as you will hear at the end of this episode. He gives us a special performance of his song, Risk the Fall live in Monkey Trench Studios. Our buddy and fellow bad ass musician, Mykey Haslip joins us in telling some fun stories and good humor.

Just have a listen and judge for yourself but I really enjoyed the hell out of this one.

Politics, Media, Social Media, and the modern musician's life with Tyson Evans of @SecondtoLast.

Taking the nation's temperature from the youth perspective with Tyson Evans and hear an exclusive acoustic performance by Tyson right from my couch in Monkey Trench Studios. His band Second to Last from Lodi, CA (yes I brought up the CCR song) has toured all over the country with some pretty well known acts that yes, he does name during the conversation. Just get in there and check it out. We covered a lot of ground and much of it was recent happenings and commentary on the US presidential race and our social and racial climate not only in this country but locally right here in Bremerton.

Bass player, Derik Envy joins Mike this week. Former- Unwritten Law, Current- True Rivals, The Briggs, Teenage Time Killers.

How to learn songs. Tattoos. Playing together on tour. Crazy America politics. What if trump wins?

I love it when something just clicks. You've been struggling with a new skill for months and it just doesn't seem to be going anywhere. But then all the sudden you go back to task or part that you previously struggled with and with no practice on the part between now and that last time you struggled with it over a month ago, you nail it with not much effort and it just clicks.

That click takes time, practice, research and the desire to be taken seriously.

Derik Envy is an American bass player and multi instrumentalist. Formerly of many bands including bass duties for San Diego's finest, Unwritten Law. That's where I first met Derik, we toured together. We get into that a little bit here. Currently playing in True RIvals, The Briggs and Teenage Time Killers. He's got a great work ethic and brings that to the stage. I love watching him up there jumping around and swinging his bass lines all over the stage. And check out his tattoos. He's a monster at this point and almost fully covered head to toe in tattoos. His head would make most mamas cry. It's bad ass. Check him out on Instagram @DerikEnvy or Twitter @DerikNV

In my conversation with Derik we talk about his learning process. Some of the skills it takes to be a professional bass player. The workflow for learning a lot of material in a short amount of time. If you play an instrument you'll wanna sit in on this conversation. We do veer off into some other topics but it's mainly a winding path from the hills of Montana to the concrete streets of Los Angeles, CA and all the crazy places between and beyond. Here's a video of True Rivals backing me up on my version of Rancid's Olympia, Wa.
